Mission:
Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian
agency that provides support from positive male role models to fatherless
boys through a variety of mentoring programs.
How:
The core program matches one fatherless boy with an adult male volunteer
(Big Brother) who becomes his role model and friend. Other short term mentoring
programs include sports, workplace and school-based programs which are
in a goup setting.
Who:
Little Brothers are between the ages of 6 and 12 and come from all areas
of Los Angeles County. They are of all ethnicities and have a variety of
interests and personalities. What they have in common is that they are
growing up without a father in their home, and most importantly, without
a positive male role model in their lives.
Why:
An in-depth, long-term study of the effectiveness of mentoring in the
lives of children was completed by the nationally renowned Philadelphia
research firm Public/Private Ventures (P/PV). Commissioned by Big Brothers/Big
Sisters of America, this first-of-its-kind, controlled study measured the
success of the Big Brother/Little Brother relationship. The results of
this three-year, $2 million study confirm our belief that the Big Brother/Little
Brother relationship is instrumental in improving a boy's self-esteem and
empowering him to become a responsible member of his community.
Requirements:
Men interested in becoming Big Brother volunteers or mentors must be
stable, mature men over the age of 18 who demonstrate responsibility and
dependability. Suitability is determined after professional, highly-trained
social workers conduct a thorough screening process.
Big Brothers are asked to see their Little Brothers consistently for
at least one year. Mentors meet in groups with their mentees for a short-term
project ranging from eight weeks to three months or longer.
Costs:
Our service is free to single mothers raising sons ages 6 through12
and to men over the age of 18 wishing to become Big Brothers or mentors.
A Big Brother's only financial responsibility is the minimum automobile
liability limit set by the state.
Funding:
Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles is a private affiliate of Big Brothers/Big
Sisters of America and is primarily supported through private funds from
foundations, corporations and individuals.
Offices:
The Administrative office is in Los Angeles. Satellite offices are located
in Culver City, the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles, Redondo Beach, North
Hollywood, the Antelope Valley, and the Inland Empire.
