Building Up Los Angeles is an unprecedented collaboration of over 60 community based organizations, colleges and universities, and human service agencies implementing the largest state commissioned National Service project in the Los Angeles area. Building Up is coordinating 150 full and part time AmeriCorps members to provide vital services addressing the most critical needs of our local neighbor hoods.
* As part of the AmeriCorps national service movement, all of our members are required to complete 1700 hours of direct service during an eleven month term of service. They receive a living allowance of $170.00 a week, health benefits, child care if required, and a $4,725 educational stipend at the end of their term of service.
Committed to providing a more localized and comprehensive model of service development and delivery while bringing together diverse neighborhoods in Los Angeles, our programs are focused in eight distinct geographic areas:
* Planted over 60 trees and 3 community gardens in East Los Angeles and South Central Watts while recruiting over 600 volunteers to participate in various community beautification projects in the neighborhood.
* Organized "Bridging the Gap", a three day diversity training and culminating cultural celebration that provided a forum for youth to discuss the issues that divide and unite the African American and Chicano/Latino communities in Los Angeles.
* Implemented an intercession program at Sheridan Elementary School.
